Tatham Macinnes undertook perhaps the most unusual assignment in its history.

The death of a whale is a major event in the ecological cycle of a marine environment. We were contacted by a television production company that had purchased a frozen humpback whale and wished to defrost it, tow it out to the Celtic Deep and then sink it whilst filming the feeding habits of the various creatures that would feed off the whale’s carcass.

Tatham Macinnes undertook the full contracting and developed a bespoke contract for the towing of a whale – nicknamed by the team involved as “Whalecon”!

The production included the two celebrities, Ben Fogle and Ellie Harrison, and Whalecon needed to deal with their availability in the context of the charterering in of highly sophisticated offshore support vessels, and the unpredictable weather of the Celtic Deep.

Ultimately, all went well and Big Wave Productions produced a fantastic program “Britain’s Sharks” that aired on ITV, resulting in the largest ever collection of sharks ever filmed in British waters. Tatham Macinnes were proud to be a very small part of this huge achievement.
